Black-browed mouse thymelia (Malacocincla perspicillata).
Panji Gusti Akbar et al. / BirdingASIA, 2021
On the Indonesian island of Borneo, the black-browed mouse thymelia, a bird that has not been seen by ornithologists since the 1840s, has been rediscovered. For almost two centuries, the only evidence of its existence remained a specimen from the museum collection, but in October 2020, two Indonesians managed to catch and photograph a live specimen. As noted in an article for BirdingASIA magazine, no Asian bird has been "lost" for so long. Now scientists intend to go to the place of the find and find out if the black-browed thymelia needs protection measures.
Some bird species are known to ornithologists from just one or several findings. For example, about the existence of a green spotted pigeon (Caloenas maculata) is evidenced by the only surviving museum specimen, obtained in an unidentified place in the late 18th - early 19th centuries and stored in one of the museums of Liverpool. And the nonchisar nightjar (Caprimulgus solala) and was completely described on the basis of one left wing, which was discovered in Ethiopia in 1990. No one has ever seen live birds of this species.
Experts believe that some of these mysterious birds have become extinct long ago, leaving almost no traces behind. First of all, this concerns island species that could become victims of predators and competitors introduced by humans. Others may never have existed and are not full-fledged species, but just unusual color morphs or hybrids.
However, in rare cases, scientists all-such manage to rediscover the "lost" birds. This is exactly what happened with the black-browed mouse thymelia (Malacocincla perspicillata) (alternative Russian name - black-browed silkfinch), a small bird from the order of passerines, which is painted in gray and brown tones and is distinguished by a thickened beak and a black mask that goes through the eye. Its only specimen was obtained between 1843 and 1848 during an expedition led by the German geologist Karl Schwaner to the island of Borneo. In 1850, it served as the basis for the description of a new species, which was made by the French ornithologist Charles Lucien Bonaparte (nephew of Napoleon I). Since then, the sample has been kept in a museum collection in Leiden, the Netherlands, and no one has seen live black-browed thymelia for at least 172 years. Although some bird watchers believed that the species was already extinct, others expected new finds.
The latter's hopes were justified in early October 2020, when residents of the Indonesian province of South Kalimantan, Muhammad Suranto and Muhammad Rizky Fauzan, saw an unknown bird in the forest. After several days of regular meetings, the men managed to catch and photograph the stranger, after which she was released. Suranto and Fauzan then shared pictures and a report of their find with local birdwatchers and professional bird watchers - and they recognized the bird as a long-lost black-browed thymelia.
Experts note that this species differs well from related species due to its unique coloration features, therefore, a determination error is excluded. At the same time, thimelia turned out to be the owner of bright red eyes, while the glass eyes of the museum copy are yellow. The color of the beak and paws of a live bird also differs from the single specimen (probably because in museums these body parts quickly fade and are tinted).
